What Is the Virtual DOM in Vue?

In Vue, the virtual DOM is a lightweight representation of a web application's user interface. It is a common concept in modern JavaScript frameworks such as Vue, created to improve performance and efficiency. Its key elements:

  1. Definition: the virtual DOM is a lightweight copy of the real DOM (Document Object Model). The DOM represents the structure and content of a web page; the virtual DOM is a representation of that structure built from JavaScript objects.
  2. Why use it? Working directly with the real DOM can be expensive, especially in large, complex applications; DOM updates can be slow and resource-intensive. The virtual DOM optimises these interactions so applications run faster.
  3. How it works: when the application's state changes, Vue first applies the changes to the virtual DOM. It then compares the new virtual DOM with the previous one and applies only the parts that changed to the real DOM. This is done with an algorithm called "diffing".
  4. Better performance: the virtual DOM reduces unnecessary DOM manipulation and updates, which matters especially for dynamic applications that respond quickly to user interaction.
  5. Reactive updates: Vue uses a reactive system that detects changes in application data and updates the related components automatically; the virtual DOM helps carry out these updates quickly and efficiently.

In short, the virtual DOM is a technique that helps Vue build web applications faster and more effectively, letting developers create quick, responsive applications with a better user experience.
